1 SIMPLE PLAN OF MATTHEW’S GOSPEL This Gospel displays a remarkable structure in that the five major discourses the Lord are preceded and followed narratives and While Jesus walked this earth, He was the Light of the world. And in the Sermon on the Mount, He said to His disciples, “You are the light of the world” (Matt. 5:14). We are not the source of light; Christ is. But as believers, we have His presence dwelling within us through His Holy Spirit. A major component of mercy is forgiveness. Christ’s teaching was that we’re to always be forgiving, even when we think we’ve reached our limit (Matthew 18:21-22). Being forgiving and merciful does not mean that we have to allow everyone to walk all over us repeatedly. That would not be good for them, for others they interact with, or for us. But, far more confusing than this was what Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount. God will bless those who are meek, merciful, peaceful, and persecuted, not those who use human strength to fight against Rome (Matt 5:3-10).
